Chapter 141 | Story
Dinner was filled with Rika's favorite dishes. Yamaga-san had clearly been thoughtful of her.
…But Rika seemed depressed throughout the meal. Dahlia, and even Yamaga-san, seemed concerned about her.
This is where I come in.
After dinner, Rika and I were alone in her room.
When we went to her room, Rika silently clung to me. I offered her my lap as a pillow.
I waited for her to speak, to tell me what she wanted to say.
And finally… Rika softly, finally opened her mouth.
“I… I'm a coward.”
“That's not true.”
I've never once thought of Rika as a coward.
“You're a kind, cute, and wonderful girl.”
She's the kind girl who helped me on Christmas Day.
But Rika shook her head.
“But I… when I thought I might be having Shin-chan's baby, I got scared. Even though it was a form of love, created between me and the Shin-chan I love so much.”
“…”
“When I found out I wasn't actually pregnant, a part of me… felt relieved.”
Tears streamed down her face as she spoke.
“I said I wanted proof of our love, Shin-chan, but when I thought it might actually be happening, I got scared. Shin-chan will be… disappointed… in me like this…”
“I won't!”
I lifted Rika up and hugged her tightly.
“I would never be disappointed in you.”
There's no reason for me to be.
I don't think of Rika as a coward at all.
“Anyone would be surprised if they suddenly found out something like that. It's natural to be scared and anxious if you find out you're having a baby without being prepared.”
“Shin-chan…”
“It's okay. Rika, you're not a coward. I, who have been by your side, can guarantee that.”
Normally, someone wouldn't stand up for someone who’s being bullied (like me).
Rika did that because she's courageous.
“It's okay. I'm here. If you're anxious, rely on me immediately. If you're scared, tell me right away. I… I'll protect you.”
