Chapter 22: Her future.
Translated and Edited by: luccayn.
Enjoy!
Verdict? Yes, one of the purposes was to find out what was going on inside her head, but the main reason was for me to cut her off and leave my farewells properly, all so I could move on without regrets.
“Heh, well, about the future of that worthless scum… You must've realized already. I was in the next room with Rein, listening in all the way through. Soon as he told me about this, I figured I had to be here as well,” he sighed. “ In any case, it would be a good opportunity to rethink whether or not that thing should be locked up hereon out, given I could count on one hand the number of times I'd met it in person. Although I made some research beforehand to know what sort of character it had.”
The marquis continued, “I had the accustomed support from the Camell house, so I thought it necessary for a thorough and final assessment in person. Wouldn't that be ideal? Moreover, I also wished to know why she suddenly called you over for a meeting.”
He explained it after noticing a huge question mark plastered on my face. Understanding his reasons, I had no reason not to be convinced. However, Rein scooted over and whispered in my ear, “The truth is that he was worried about you since he vaguely knew that thing's character, so he came to see it through personally.”
“Reinhard, you should have a better grasp on your privies.”
Needless to say, he could see everything as he was right in front of us. Though he put on stern airs as her scolded Rein, his eyes were the spitting image of fatherly love. It was okay then. Probably.
“So, about the thing… The reason I decided on just giving her the punishment of being stripped of her nobility and living in a faraway place, is simple. Despite everything, she's still a young girl; I've decided that her former grandparents and former parents were to blame for the huge failure in her upbringing. This is something I have not made public, but I've told both the count and countess of the Camell house to have Miss Lyla take over the reins. They should be able to retire as soon as possible. As for the grandparents, they are only being watched and kept alive at the moment, carefully under eyes so they may not commit suicide.”
“Huh? That's news to me too,” Rein mused.
“Hmm, now that you mention it… This was made possible because the next head of the Camell family, Miss Lyla, is extremely talented. The current count and countess already agreed and are making preparations. However, from hereon out, the royalists will decide on how to handle the grandparents, who are currently kept under watch.”
Both Rein and I were surprised. Still, I understood. Even though Marquis Andrea said that he would suppress her anger by truncating her, he didn’t say that he wouldn’t hold the Camel household accountable.
“After today, I understand the nature of that thing better. It would be easier to educate a stray dog into nobility than to reform her. I can only say, then, that the current count and countess of the Camells were unlucky. Regardless, I didn't intend on forgiving her at all, but thought I could be at least a tad pleased had she formed a semblance of an apology,” he paused. “But that thing didn't apologize once, even to the bitter end—Despite, after much hardship, understanding her position, she still had no remorse or awareness for what she actually did. That's just plain awful.”
His words of astonishment kept coming. “That thing will probably forget what happened today or change the facts to suit her own convenience so she'd be the tragic heroine of the story. Incarceration is meant to be a form of isolation, but it is also a punishment for living the rest of one’s life miserably, reflecting on and regretting one’s past. Thus it's meaningless if one can live in a happy daydream, thinking themselves to be some sort of tragic hero.”
Wow, I could totally see her doing that… She would really think that the fault lay in those around her, and never in herself, despite being the common denominator. If anything, in her mind, I would be the operatic villain who brought every bit of misfortune upon her.
“Therefore, that thing is not worth being kept alive—Such is my verdict,” the marquis mentioned offhandedly, pressing his lips to his cup and sipping some tea. “However, you are the victim here and feel everything directly, not by proxy. Ruben, what is your input?”
Both his and his son's eyes were locked on me. For a moment I posed a question inwardly, asking myself if it was okay to expose my opinions honestly, though I had originally planned to ask both Lyla and Rein for some insight. Whether or not that will come true, and if my word is final, I will say it here.
“I… No, my apologies. In my opinion—”

Thanks for the chapter.
Okay, swinging around on this.
Yeah, she's a self-absorbed and selfish woman, but she seems guilty of... flirting?
Even if she was cheating, I'm not sure it warrants being de-persons, dehumanised, cast into permanent imprisonment and potentially death because she's... what, a selfish and cruel idiot who is even admitted by the Count as being raised into one by her grandparents?
This is worth death? I'm not sure that the protagonist's side is necessarily the good side, and is just veering into revenge fantasies. Did the author get dumped when writing this?
Thanks for the chapters
