[Buffon’s POV]
In an attempt to forget the unjust humiliation the wretched brats of the Dark attribute had given me, I went alone to my favorite diner. However, what awaited me there was an even greater absurdity.
“Alright, for the two of you, we’ll have a private room given as requested… Oh, young lady? Your companion is… I see. In that case, please come this way first. I’ll show you your table.”
“…Thank you.”
Adorned in a white, short silver dress, cleansed long hair, and a purple shawl draped over her, she appeared just like a human being. Deceiving, cunning, disgusting. The brown-furred dog, whom I had taken care of as if it were my own, but had forgotten the kindness and betrayed me, bowed her head deferentially as she was led by a servile waiter to further inside the establishment.
“Bwah?!”
Right before my eyes, the unimaginable was made real. An unparalleled absurdity…!
Wha-What the hell? A private room?! Don’t mess with me! Just how much does that dog think it costs to use that place? Even I never went to one before.
N-No, I can’t tolerate this! Absolutely not! That filthy Dark sow cannot stand above mem even for a moment! — No, this isn’t just about me. It’s not only my problem. It’s about the tranquility of this establishment, and by extension, the order of the world! We must never allow these Darkness bums to flaunt themselves in public like that!
Yes, this is justice! It’s for the greater good! Right now, I must kick out that cur from this place, and then remind her where she belongs with my own hands! I must retrain her as the submissive dog she is! No, a sow—!?
“Oh? And where do you think you’re going, sir? Ah, pardon me. Should I address you as the leader of the Fellowship of the Hunters, Mr. Buffon?”
“Bwah?!”
A sudden Voice snapped me back to reality. It came from no place in particular but at the same time from every corner of the establishment. I couldn’t take a step further.
Simultaneously, an ineffable pressure assaulted my body from within. All I could do was shrivel and shiver in place, frozen as if I was on the verge of dying to harsh cold. And the blood that rushed to my head had cooled down in an instant.
Stopped in my tracks, sweat oozed out of my body as it each droplet tried to run from the Voice, leaving me behind.
Not only that, I gasped for air. Wh-What’s wrong? N-No… I can’t… can’t breathe…?!
“Bwah…? Bwah…?!”
Something I swore to be real assaulted my senses; it was as if someone had my heart in their hands, literally. I could barely stand up. Although an illusion, the pain it caused me was definitely real.
Desperately trying to string together my rapidly waning breaths, I gasped my mouth and nose even more, trying with all my might to stay conscious.
“Oh, my apologies. It seems I’ve made quite the oopsie. It appears I’ve been a bit too forceful, hm? Can you believe a supposed leader of an adventurer party to be as fragile as yourself? …Well then, no matter. Can you respond at this level?”
As his words left nowhere and went through my ears, the crushing pressure began to weaken. Finally regaining my normal breath, I inhaled a mighty heft of air and directed my voice as vehemently as possible toward the insolent intruder.
“You damned fool… Who are you…?! How do you know my name…?!”
“I haven’t introduced myself, have I? Allow me, then. I am Reiss. Please remember that name well. In fact, etch it firmly into the recesses of your mind alongside my Voice, and never forget it. Alright?”
Like a dangerous fish crawling through my ear canals, his voice echoed within.
Reiss.
Most of all, that name was a detestable name which signified death. A horrible omen.
