Legend has it that all trees growing in this notorious forest are, or once were the most mythic of trees—Trents.
In other words, the one that towers over them all, and the one I’m currently roosted on, might have once been a Giant Trent like the newborn one sprouting right in front of me.
Of course, I don’t know if this legend is true, nor can I confirm it.
“Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire! Fireeeeeee!”
Under Buffon’s command, his Fellowship of the Hunters—Cursemaker included—gathered every bit of power they had and began a volley against the Giant Trent. Fireballs, ice arrows, stones, and any other form of projectile were launched into the growing creature before it could even move.
It wasn’t a bad strategy on their part. Unleashing everything into a surprise attack, before the enemy could even prepare, was the best course of action here. Even if a huge monster were to withstand the onslaught, it would still deal a considerable amount of damage to them. Case in point, the mangled corpses of the wolves.
However, the only unfortunate part of Buffon’s plan was that they were attacking a Giant Trent, a magical plant that sprouted within the Forest of Bewitching Trees.
“Bwahaha! How about that, you monster!? No matter how huge you are, you won’t come out clean from such a coordinated attack!”
The results were apparent. As he boasted, the tree creaked a sound akin to a cry.
Most of its branches were broken, and a significant portion of its thick trunk had been stripped away and chipped to bits. Its hidden core had been also partially exposed, and dozens of arrows had been lodged deep into its surface.
From the hollow openings in the Trent’s crevices, an anguished holler creaked out in pain. While it was a sign they managed to scratch the creature, it also served as a sinister omen capable of stirring unease in those who heard it.
“Bwahaha! Quite the tenacious monster, are ya?! But with the next volley—”
The signs of change bore bad news. Before anyone had realized, the roots of the Giant Trent had spread across the entire clearing within the forest. From each one, a new Trent would be spawned, and it wouldn’t stop so soon.
“Bwah?! No! Don’t mind the small fry, lads! Concentrate your firepower on this monster! If we defeat this creature, it will probably—”
While his strategy still wasn’t bad, it was far too late. The Giant Trent let out a complex sound mimicking a roar, a result of the air leaving the hollow and crooked crevices in its body. In response, the fallen fibers of his shattered trunk writhed like living creatures on the grass, connecting one after another as if coordinated.
Each fragment of bark turned into a branch, then into a trunk, lodging itself back into the Giant Trent as its leaves grew lush once more.
“Bwah?! What the?!”
Not even a minute later, the Giant Trent had fully regained its overwhelming presence, almost piercing the sky.
Its extreme regenerative power was the reason why the Giant Trent was considered the worst, most despicable monster within the whole Forest of Bewitching Trees.
