After homeroom, the classroom’s atmosphere lightens, and my classmates in Class A begin to form groups and chat during the few recesses that are left. I didn’t see any of them gathering around me, only staring at me from afar.
Fortunately, my seat is at the very back of the class, so I don’t stand out that much.
After a bit, I ask the only person I know here about this class.
“What’s up, Haru?”
“What kind of class is Class A?”
“Hmm? It’s just a normal one, isn’t it?”
“No, that’s not what I meant… I’m talking about the caste.”
“Oooh, that’s what you meant!” She clasped her hands together. “Well… The boy over by the window, the one surrounded by cronies, is the second son of the Senbonin group, Mikado Senbonin. He has a lot of power in Japan, so don’t pick a fight with him, m’kay?”
She pointed at a boy with his hair pulled back in a bun, with silver donning some of his meshes. Even to the casual observer, he exuded clear confidence.
“Oh, and the girl sleeping on the edge right there is Izumikawa Karen! She’s the eldest daughter of the Izumikawa family, and their connections with outside countries are rather strong. Whenever she starts a fight, people around just join in and it can be a bit troublesome.”
Usami-san… Why are you assuming there will be a fight? Are they fighting junkies who are always frantically searching for an opponent?
I pulled back a bit after seeing this side of Usami I’ve never seen before. She continued without regarding my own surprise.
“And finally, that girl in the middle of class, surrounded my most cronies, is Erika Oujima. Against her family, well, I must admit even I’m a bit outclassed as well…”
She finished introducing our main classmates.
And, Usami… It’s not good to judge everything by whether you can or cannot win. So, if you fight anyone but the Oujima Conglomerate, you’ll win, huh.
Just as she finished, the teacher in charge of first period entered the classroom. With this arrival, everyone in this class gradually sat down, and with the first period chime ringing in the background, my first class in this new school began.
Kiin~ Koon~ Kang~ Koon~
With the bell signaling the end of fourth period, it was time for the one-hour lunch break.
Classes at Touou High were befitting of its status. If I don’t study hard, I’ll easily fail class. Though, there are a few strange subjects mixed in between…
Checking the weekly timetable, I find that it included “Imperial Studies”, which just served to remind me I was currently in a different world.
“Haru, do you wanna have lunch with me?”
She pulled out several stacks of boxes, placing each on the desk, and invited me to eat with her.
“Usami… I’m your valet. It’ll raise some eyebrows if we eat together. Oh, and there’s also a passage on the ‘Valet Guide’ that says I need to keep a certain distance.”
She puffed out her cheeks and sulked. Are you a child?
“Well then, I order you to have lunch with me now!”
She pointed her index at me with great vigor.
“I, I don’t wanna…”
“One of the rules of being a valet is absolute obedience to your master’s orders! You haven’t forgotten that, have you, Haru?”
“Haha… I surrender, I surrender.”
I raised both my hands in the air, striking that cliche pose.
“Well then, let’s go Haru.”
I was nervous when she gleefully took my hand and lead the way, but I tried my damn best not to let her know that.
As Usami leads the way, we eventually arrive at the door leading to the roof of the school building. The door was obviously padlocked.
However, Usami grinned like a mischievous child and pulled out the key out of her pocket.
“I was prepared for this scenario, so I borrowed the master key!”
Huh? What do you mean by that? What circumstance would lead to an ordinary student needing to borrow a master key? Well, in any case, it’s easy to imagine she’s up to no good.
I smiled, half in surprise and half in dismay at my childhood friend’s ability to do more than I had imagined. Usami then inserted the master key into the lock, making a clattering sound, and the door soon opened.
When I stepped out of the door, I didn’t expect to see someone already there. It was Izumikawa, whom Usami had told me about. She was sprawled out on the rooftop with an emotionless face.
How did she get here with the door locked? Does she also have a key?
Puzzled by the situation before me, I watched her for a minute or so, util she suddenly woke up. As she stood up, the sleepy girl turned to us with great vigor and a grimace on her face.
“Who are you guys?”
Her expression made it hard to guess what she was thinking. The way her emotionless eyes pierced my soul irked me a bit.
“This is my nap place. If you don’t have any business with me, scram.”
When I tried to explain, she interrupted me mid-sentence, flat-out rejecting me.
“Well then, it can’t be helped. Usami, it’s best we—”
“—Izumikawa-san, you can have all the food in here, so can we have the rooftop?”
I was about to ask her to leave Izumikawa alone, but Usami interrupted me. The sleepy girl stared at the stacked box Usami pointed to as an exchange, drool dripping from her mouth.
“Today’s menu includes grilled lobster, deep-fried Nagoya chicken, seasonal vegetable tempura, tai meshi made from the finest sea bram, and much, much more.”
Her mouth turned into a waterfall as the list went on.
“Understood. Negotiations complete ~♪”
Izumikawa vigorously took the heavy box, turned around, and left the rooftop, happily skipping away. Before she completely slips away, I asked her a question that’s been boggling my mind.
“By the way, how did you get to the rooftop?”
“… Through the pipes.”
“That’s all I wanted to ask. Thank you very much.”
I bowed to Izumikawa, and after confirming I’d done so, she finally slipped off with a grin on her face.
Hey, Touou High! You’re extremely unsecure, you know that?
Unknowing my vexation, Usami happily pulled out a smaller lunch box. I couldn’t help but wonder where she’d hidden that.
“Come on, Haru! The stacked boxes are gone, but there’s still a small lunch box left, so let’s eat together!”
“Eh, no, that’s not good.”
“It is! Actually, I made this lunch box for you… I worked really hard on it for you, Haru… Could you please eat it?”
She tilted her head, looking at me with those upturned eyes of hers. Honestly, how could I say no to them?
I put my hands to my face, hiding from her cuteness, looking straight above at the heavens.
It’s baffling… Usami gets cuter every time I see her. There is no shadow of the mischievous childhood friend I saw when I was little. All I can see now is the fact my childhood friend has become a beautiful girl with long black hair.
I still try to hide my palpitating heart.
“Well then Haru, ahnn~”
She offered me a piece of an omelet she picked up with her chopsticks, and I ate it. Whenever she’d say “ahnn~”, I’d just open my mouth and munch. Rinse and repeat as time passed by.
After finally finishing the day, I came home from school, had my usual meal and bath, a routine I picked up after a while, and jumped into bed.
I was tired for the day. It was the first time I was placed into a new environment such as that one, so it was natural I was physically exhausted. However, my mind was strangely uplifted.
My consciousness fades away as my exhausted body leads me into deep slumber.
I had… fun today? Yeah, I’m actually having fun, huh…
I finally break off all contact with the world, confirming the regaining of some lost feelings of mine, and I sleep content.
