A lukewarm breeze was streaming in through the open window. It was evening time, and the chirping of a brown-eared bulbul was beginning to be heard in the distance.
Sousuke Sugaya was sitting in his classroom after school, facing Shion Izaki, who was also on daily duty, and was writing in his duty journal.
“Sou-chan, are we done yet?”
“Just a little more. Wait a minute.”
Shion looks out the window with a bored look on her face. She has a childish face and a chestnut-colored bobbed short hair. If it weren’t for her height, she would look like an elementary school student.
“Haa, I want to go home.”
Sousuke and Shion have known each other since childhood and live in the same neighborhood. They have known each other since preschool. It was only when they entered high school that they were in the same class.
“It’s done. I’ll bring it to the staff room.”
“Yeey. Yes, I’m going home. Take care of it!”
“Oh, that’s right. Shion, are you studying at home?”
“School stuff. Auntie was worried about you. Last month’s final, you failed, didn’t you?”
She made a disgusted face.
“That’s what my mom told you …… You know, you’ve been making a lot of petty comments lately, you know? It’s none of Sou-chan’s business if my grades drop.”
“I’m letting you copy the assignment, and you’re saying that?”
She froze for about ten seconds.
“A-Anyway, don’t talk to me like you’re my mother. It’s none of your business.”
“Antie asked me to tell you, because you’re not doing it.”
“Mouu! Come to think of it, didn’t I tell you that I went to the arcade the other night? Aren’t you terrible?”
“In that arcade, there are college students who do katsuyage, so you’re supposed to be careful. Especially at night.” [Katsuyage =extortion of money or goods (e.g. from lower year students); shakedown]
“Annoying, so annoying!”
And as we’re having this exchange.
“Are you guys on day duty?”
Looking at us through the classroom door was Kaname Izumi, the school’s student body president. She has long black hair that almost reaches her thighs, a long skirt, a blouse buttoned up to the first button, and a ribbon tied symmetrically. She gives the impression of a serious student representative. Her face is also well-defined.
The student council is said to make rounds of each building and classroom after school, so she must be active as well.
Shion rushed to the student council president. She then pointed a finger at Sousuke.
“It’s terrible, he’s sexually harassed me and was about to attack me.”
Sousuke stood up.
“What are you talking about?”
The quality is not even close to being good enough.
” …… sexual harassment”
The student body president’s eyes were fixed on him.
“How dare you do such a thing in my precious school building.”
She walked up to him, stomping her feet.
“No, it’s just her speaking without thinking. I didn’t do anything.”
“There was no question.”
Shion must have meant it as a prank. However, it seems that the serious student council president did not get the joke. Sousuke’s arm was grabbed and he was quickly forced to lie face down on the floor.
“I’m going to ask the teacher to come over, so be prepared.”
Sousuke probably did not expect the student body president to go to such lengths. Shion looked at Sousuke in surprise.
A few minutes later, Sousuke was in the student guidance office. Sitting in front of him was the student guidance teacher and homeroom teacher, Yamase.
“Well, what the hell. Sugaya wouldn’t do something that stupid, right?”
Sousuke was looking gloomy with a downcast look on his face.
“Are you all right?”
Yamase looks into his face with concern. He is usually a very strict instructor, but Sousuke was so depressed that he was concerned about him.
“Actually, Izaki gave me an explanation just now. So don’t worry, I won’t be talking to the principal or vice principal.”
“I’ll give Izaki a warning, so go home today.”
Sousuke stood up, bailed, and left the student guidance office.
Often he hears stories of false accusations of molestation, but he knows what it feels like to be a real victim. Here at Momoka Toka Academy, it is a private high school. Unlike public schools, they are very strict about this kind of thing. If it had not been for Shion’s confession, she might have been expelled from school.
“Is it okay now?”
Shion was worried about him, but it would have been harsh to expel him from school. It was getting tedious to think about what she would have done if she had not confessed to the crime.
“Let’s go home.”
Let’s take a break early. That’s what he decided and left the school.
Early morning the next day.
Until yesterday, he had picked up Shion at home, but as expected, he didn’t do it today.
“The damage is worse than I thought.”
He sighed heavily as he walked alone to the bus stop. After a night’s sleep, he reconsidered. It’s true that the petulant words have been escalating recently. In other words, they are strangers to each other, so over-interference is certainly just annoying. He must reflect on this point.
“Let’s stop it.”
He vowed that from now on he would not interfere with Shion’s words, actions, or behavior. After all, he had almost been expelled from school. It would be strange to put his life on the line to take care of her.
He arrived at the school by the usual bus and entered a classroom on the second floor.
Immediately, a classmate sitting in front of me called out.
“Hayo, Is Izaki off today? “
He had been going to school with her without missing a single day, so it was only natural that someone would ask him this.
“I think she’s coming, but I’m not sure.”
” Eh? Is that so?”
After that, Shion came to school just before homeroom started. Sousuke did not speak to Shion that day, but he did not notice the occasional glance he felt.
Then, after school, just as he was leaving the classroom to go home, he was stopped.
Silently, he turned around to see Shion with her hands folded in front of her, looking a little apologetic.
“I’m sorry about yesterday. I just lost my temper.”
“I’m really sorry”
“I understand. I was also a little bit out of line. I’m sorry.”
Sousuke said that and started walking again.
“Eh, ah Sou-chan”
He did not respond to the voice that called out to him.
Since there was no one chasing after him, he decided to go home, but he saw the student council in front of the main gate talking to the students leaving school. Naturally, the student council president, Kaname Izumi, was also standing there.”
As I tried to pass by with a nonchalant look on my face, I was blocked.
Sousuke took a step back and kept his distance.
“Yes, but what is it?”
“What about it”
“…. Come to the student council room for a minute.”
Running away here was bound to be troublesome later on. Sousuke decided to follow the instructions maturely.
The Student Council Room is located on the first floor of the building where the special classrooms are located.
Sousuke and the student council president sat down facing each other across the long table.
“So, what can I do for you?”
“I heard you had a lot to say to Izaki-san.”
Sousuke’s eyebrows twitched. Deep down in his heart, he had expected an apology, even if it was only a token one, but apparently that was not the case.
“The reason for this is that the situation was brought about by you, wasn’t it? I think you should reflect on it.”
Unable to resist, Sousuke slapped the table with both hands and stood up.
“If that’s all you want to talk about, I’ll leave. I’m busy too.”
“Wait a minute, I’m not finished talking with you.”
“I’m sorry to be rude, but yesterday was the first time you spoke to me, right, President? This is a matter between me and …… Izaki-san ……. It is not something to be meddled with by someone else, and you, who has absolutely nothing to do with it.”
She didn’t argue back, as if a good argument had stung.
“Then, I beg your pardon.”
As of yesterday, he was apologetic, but for the first time, he was angry. To think that there was not even an apology for the violence she had caused.
“That’s the student body president?”
Sousuke muttered to himself and left the school.
After finishing dinner, Sousuke was playing on his PC in his room. He accessed a website and played a video that he found interesting. Time flew by as he watched the recommendations from one side to the other.
He was aware that he was wasting his precious evening.
Just thinking about Kaname Izumi with her cool face makes his gut churn.
The intercom rang at home.
His mother answered, and after a moment the door opened with a knock.
“G-Good evening, Sou-chan. May I come in?”
He clicked his tongue in an exhilarating manner. Shion pulled a face. Then she sat upright in front of the door.
“Y-You’re still mad at me, aren’t you? I got mad and I said those things, but I’m really sorry. Truely.”
The cause of his frustration is definitely Kaname, but it seems he can’t help but let it out on her. It would be better to have her leave before that happens.
“I heard that at school. I understood without being told repeatedly. There’s no point in dilly-dallying over something that’s already done. Don’t bother coming over to my house, I’m not mad at you.”
“You just look like you’re mad at me!”
“So what? I’m pissed, so what? I swear I’ll never interfere with Shion again, just like you wanted. From now on, you can do whatever you want.”
Before I knew it, Shion had tears in her eyes.
“Y-you don’t have to say that much.”
“I have nothing more to say to you, so can you leave? I’m sure Shion will be relieved. I was annoying you”
“T-that’s not true.”
After that, when Sousuke ignored her, Shion staggered off.
It might have been out of line, but any more than that and he might have said something really hurtful.
Sousuke clicked on the recommended video.
The next day. When he left home a little early, he saw two figures in front of his apartment.
The one standing with her arms folded was Mizuka Tsubaki, a classmate from the same high school. The one hiding behind her, asking about Sousuke’s condition, was Shion.
“Good morning, Sugaya.”
A little quarrelsome.
“Good morning. You’re up very early. What do you want from me?”
Mizuka unfolded her arms, looking a little uncomfortable.
“You must be really angry. You have a very strong aura about you.”
“I’m not angry. How many times have people told me that since yesterday?”
Mizuka put her hands out in front of her.
“Relax. Yesterday, Shion called me crying. That made me really depressed too.”
“I heard what happened. It’s all Shion’s fault. You did nothing wrong. She is very sorry, and I’m not asking you to forgive her, but can you please continue to be her childhood friend as before?”
Shion nodded her head repeatedly behind her back.
“You don’t know this, Tsubaki-san, but Shion didn’t want me to interfere with her. This is the situation Shion wanted.”
“Well, well. I mean, Sugaya, aren’t you getting on your nerves with someone other than Shion? I feel like you’re taking it out on her.”
When Sousuke was told what to say, he fell silent.
“Why don’t you tell me? I’ll listen.”
His anger quickly subsided. It was during junior high school when he met her. He was introduced to me as a friend of Shion’s. She is really good at reading the air and understanding people’s feelings.
She persuaded me and he had no choice but to tell her exactly what had happened yesterday in the student council room. It was as if he was overcome by Mizuka’s calm response to everything he said.
And when he was done talking.
Mizuka’s face was drawn back. The student council president’s words and deeds seem to have drawn her away from the situation.
“Really Something’s screwed up in her head, isn’t it?”
“I thought Shion had said something.”
Then Shion shook her head.
“I didn’t say that.”
“Oh, well, if you say something like that without apologizing, of course you’ll get angry. But, don’t dump it on Shion because of that. Because she apologized. She’s so sorry that she cries.”
When pressed by the two, Sousuke’s shoulders slumped as if he had given up. It is true that he had dumped it on Shion, and he knew that his words had hurt her more than necessary.
“I understand. I’m not going to change. But I won’t take care of you in every way like before. Okay?”
Shion’s expression brightened.
“Yes, I’m happy just to have Sou-chan talk to me normally.”
“What’s that? You’re just being annoying. ……”
“Fufufufun. Let’s go”
Sousuke let out a breath mixed with a chuckle.
“You’re looking good.”
“You think so?”
“Oh, thanks, Mizuka-chan, and I’m sorry it’s so early in the morning.”
“No problem. I’m glad you could make up.”
The three of us decided to go to the bus stop on the main street.
“By the way, the student body president …… is very stubborn, serious and demanding and is increasing the number of strict school rules, but I didn’t know she was that insane.”
“It’s a race we will never understand.”
Sousuke then let out a sigh.
“I too …… was taken back when she suddenly slammed Sou-chan to the floor.”
“I don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t want to get involved.”
As soon as they reached the stop, the bus arrived.
